- This most aptly titled 2015 winner of the American Book Award, described best by the author as “The history of the United States is a history of settler colonialism - the founding of a state based on the ideology of white supremacy, the widespread practice of African slavery, and a policy of genocide and land theft… Writing US history from an Indigenous people’s perspective requires rethinking the consensual national narrative” (Dunbar-Ortiz 2014:2). Indeed, this work will resonate with CRM professionals, who should again consider the author’s words: “ The late Native historian Jack Forbes always stressed that while living persons are not responsible for what their ancestors did, they are responsible for the society they live in, which is a product of the past” (Dunbar-Ortiz 2014:235).
