• Primarily Mississippi but includes brief discussions of southwest Alabama.
• Reconstructing trails within the Choctaw Nation in the [late] eighteenth century.
• Based on travel journals, maps (primarily from the second half of the century).
• Projects the location of Yowani village in Township 10N, Range 7 West (southwest quarter) (Carleton 1989:57).
o A search of the MSSF shows some survey work in the area, and several lithic debitage-only sites recorded in Wayne County. The area likely indicated by Carleton is Section 28 or thereabouts.
• Nanawaya [sic] Mound is identified in the text as 22WN501 (Carleton 1989:67) but is recorded with MDAH as 22WI500.
• Interesting discussion of eighteenth century population and house estimates in regard to villages and hamlets (Carleton 1989:114-115). Provides corresponding locations of these villages by townships and ranges.
o Brief check of the MSSF does show that over the intervening three decades since his thesis was published, there have been historical Native American sites recorded in many of these locations, however it is unclear if correlations between the archaeology and historical records have been made for these sites based on the reports.
