• Map depicts the central Gulf of Mexico north through the Chahta Nation, with a detailed inset of the Mississippi River north to the Illinois nation.
• This map is a key work of mid-18th-century cartography, showcasing d'Anville's approach to geographic accuracy based on the most recent information available from explorers, military reports, and earlier maps. Because of this precision and detail, it was widely used by diplomats, military strategists, and explorers.
• The interior is devoid of landscape information other than the rivers and drainage ways around them. Indigenous towns and associated information are also largely absent with a few exceptions.
• The Chahta Nation is depicted with some level of detail in what is today central Mississippi with several “Grand villages” mapped.
