• The map depicts the north-central Gulf Coast inland to the Chickasaw Nation.
• This de Batz’s map illustrates the strategic importance of the Gulf Coast for the French colonial empire, as it was a vital corridor for communication and trade between “Louisiana” and other parts of the French and Spanish claims in the Southeast.
• There is not a significant level of cultural detail to this map, of note is that the “Naniabas” are shown on the Pascagoula River rather than the Mobile River. The “Taensas,” “Apalaches,” and “Tahouachas” are shown as residing on the west side of the Delta/Bay.
