• Depicts portion of Western Hemisphere (Central America, northwestern South America, southern North America, and coast of Tamaulipas (Mexico).
• Map is in Latin and the text on the verso is in Spanish.
• Map is very similar to Cruz’s 1572 map, but only lists the towns of “Achusi” and “Tascalifa” in the vicinity of “Rio de Flores.”
• Ortelius, a Flemish engraver, first published Theatrum orbis terrarium (Theater of the World), in 1570. Considered by some as Europe’s first atlas and reflects the European age of exploration, broadened commercial connections, and scientific inquiry.
• Subsequent maps, likely including this 1584 map, were updated versions of his original 1570 work. He possibly was the first to place the Indigenous towns on the map, and later cartographers followed suit.
