• A cultural context that focuses on the historical period for the interior portion of Hancock County within the Stennis Buffer Zone was requested by MDAH for the Proposed Texas Flat Mitigation Bank project area.
• Historical document research indicates that there was a Choctaw settlement in the project area, and the focus of the report shifted to the historical evidence of that occupation within the project tract.
o Additional evidence of early settlements and other possible Choctaw families was explored, although these were not as fruitful. Based on historical research it does appear that there was a sizeable Choctaw occupation in the NE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 12 in Township 8S Range 6W for at least 40 years.
o Because this family represents the only documented case of a Choctaw land claim in southern Mississippi after removal it is considered to be potentially significant not only to local history, but to the history of the state and the Choctaw Nation.
